KR Securities Pty Ltd is a boutique financial planning practice operating under its own independent Australian Financial Services License. Since 1995 KR has specialised in the administration and advice to Self Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF). They offer high quality personalised advice, predominantly to small business and professional clients.


Nathan Baker

Nathan Baker has worked in the financial planning industry for a little over 11 years and has specialised in SMSFs for 10 of these. He is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) He is a current specialist member of the SPAA (Self Managed Super Professionals Association of Australia) (SSA) which is the leading professional association in relation to SMSF advice. Nathan also sits on both the SPAA's national regulatory committee (responsible for preparing regulatory submissions to both the federal government and to the ATO) and the national professional standards committee (responsible for the development and oversight of educational standards, disciplinary matters and related policy).

Nathan has successfully completed study at the undergraduate and postgraduate level (to a Masters level) and received the following awards:

Nathan has extensive experience advising across a wide range of SMSF structural and strategic planning issues as these relate to the lifecycle of a client's SMSF.

He has also authored or co-authored articles in the Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources, the Australian Journal of Communication, Sport Med News and Australian Triathlete Magazine.

When you’re setting up an SMSF there are some fundamental decisions that need to be made before you even get started.  These will affect the way the super fund is run, the powers that it has, and the administrative ease with which changes to the structure can be made.  So its not just, ‘what should we call our fund’.  One of the biggest decisions you make at this stage is whether to have individual or corporate trustees.  Unfortunately there is a sizable cost disparity between the two options and I think all too often this initial cost saving becomes the dominant reason for the decision.

Annuities used to come with a number of Centrelink benefits and of course they allow you to walk away from any investment responsibility. The Centrelink benefits are gone (in comparison to the standard account based pension) but they still offer certainty of income in troubled times. This certainty tends to be seen as attractive when investment markets look shaky.
